Ulladulla's oldest house, circa 1850

The house was built in 1850 by Stephen Knapp who established a bacon factory in Ulladulla. This house is the only surviving one of the 3 workers cottages he built. Many workers lived in these cottages until sold privately in 1863 to a James Fleming.

Ownership of the last surviving cottage passed through many hands over subsequent years and the property was placed on the market for the final time in 1994.

After much discussion a "Save the House" Committee was formed to save the cottage from demolition; a condition of sale by the vendor. The committee together with the council and with generous donations from local businesses decided that the house be moved to council administered land in Green Street, Ulladulla.

Without being dismantled the house was moved from its location in St.Vincent Street on the back of a truck to it's current position. TAFE students, Skill Share and local tradesmen donated their services to partially restore the building and nestle it into its new surroundings.

In 2003 the house was leased to the Milton/Ulladulla Historical Society. A management agreement with Something's Brewing began on 17th March 2006 after extensive works by the Shoalhaven City Council to restore the house to its former glory.

This house is a valuable and unique building, being one of the few surviving constructed of slab and weatherboard.

Historical displays and photographs provided by the Milton Ulladulla Historical Society are on permanent display in the cottage.

Opening hours are Monday, Wednesday - Friday 9am - 5pm, Saturday 9am - 4pm, and Sunday 10am - 3pm. The house is closed on Tuesdays.
